About Katie
Katie has been practicing law in Kentucky since 1977. She was admitted to the bar that year, opened her own firm in Louisville, and ran it as a solo practitioner for almost four decades. In 2017, she joined Nolia Batey O’Dea, and the two practices became Batey Brophy & O’Dea, PLLC.
She did her undergraduate work at the University of Kentucky and stayed there for law school. At the College of Law, she served on Law Review.
Katie has tried civil and criminal cases to juries in courts all over Kentucky. These days, her practice runs through Jefferson County Circuit and Family Courts, and the work is almost entirely family law.
What Katie Does
Family law is where the legal questions sit right on top of the most personal parts of someone’s life. Divorce, contested or uncontested. Custody and visitation. Child support. Property division. Spousal maintenance. Paternity. Modifications, when life shifts and an existing order no longer fits. Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. Protective orders in domestic violence cases. Katie handles all of it, with one exception – she does not take adoptions.
Katie carries one of the largest active caseloads at the firm. Almost fifty years of trying cases changes how a lawyer thinks about every matter, including the ones that never see a courtroom.
Background
From the late 1970s until 2017, Katie ran the Law Office of Katie Brophy as a solo practitioner. In those years she handled a broad mix of civil and criminal matters, and that experience still shapes how she practices today.
She has been a member of the Kentucky Bar Association in good standing since 1977. Her KBA member number is 07905.
